“SAPPHO COULD’VE BATHED HERE”
written by Nelly Weston, Directed by Bella Finlayson.

A theatre and community project generating a sapphic eco-system to fight loneliness and the under-representation of queer women and non-binary characters through Sappho’s poetry, magical-realism and quick-witted comedy.

Inspired by our need to represent Sapphic Communities beyond the realms of sexualisation and fetishization, we intend to expose queer joy as a radical act against the tragic queer narrative, exploring the power of queer friendship and platonic intimacy.

The piece itself is a slice-of-life yet surreal portrayal of a diverse, chaotic, young-adult sapphic friendship group who unwind, heal, overcome, reflect and recharge together inside the safety of their shared bathroom in their grotty Bristolian flat, a space signifying safety and playfulness, where strife can be left on the bathmat…

We have facilitated two small-scale R&D workshops with Sapphic-creatives, exploring world-building, community, the use of Sappho’s poetry, and the way in which the poetry, the movement and the naturalistic dialogue can co-exist and blend together on stage.

We are currently applying for funding to take this project further, and will be casting in the near future!

We are very keen to collaborate!
